What do I do when I want to decommission equipment and/or send equipment to LBNL Excess or Salvage?
Identifying hazards and potential contaminants
The owner of the equipment is responsible for identifying the hazards of their equipment and meeting applicable requirements prior to entering a work order for transportation. Expand for details.
- Check the equipment manual for any indications of potential hazardous material or contaminants or components that contain hazards.
- Look for any hazard labels or signage that indicate a hazardous material or contaminant is present.
- Inspect for radiological hazards or signs indicating the presence of radiological materials.
- Check WPC for any reference or indications that the equipment may contain hazards associated with the equipment.
- Identify the DOE tag on the equipment and follow the Excess guidance for the DOE tag removal.
- For full details, refer to policy regarding releasing equipment from spaces including labs and technical areas.
Unsure of Hazards?
- If it is legacy equipment, seek historical knowledge from the previous user
- Reach out to colleagues with similar equipment
- Contact your Division Safety Coordinator (DSC)
- Contact your EHS Health and Safety Representative
- Loop in the EHS SME of suspected hazard
- For concerns regarding radiological material, contact RPG at rpg-request@lbl.gov prior to arranging for
Excess / Salvage Items with hazards
- If hazards have been identified, remove the hazardous material, contaminants, or components
- Contact the appropriate EHS SME
- Check the specific equipment requirements
- Remove parts or components that contain hazardous materials
- Submit a facilities work order
- Use subcontractor for help in removing parts or components (contact DSC to help coordinate)
- Confirm hazardous, radiological materials or contaminants have been removed
- Physically verify with your DSC that the hazardous materials, contaminants, or components have been removed
- Create a Work Order for Excess/Salvage pickup
After a Work Order approval, a form will be sent to the owner of the equipment. Please attach the form to the equipment for Excess/Salvage pickup.
