What types of lab coats are needed and available?
All Divisions working with chemicals at Berkeley Lab currently use chemical resistant and flame resistant type lab coats. A lab coat with enhanced flame retardant capability (Nomex™ or equivalent) is required for handling pyrophoric materials outside of inert glove boxes. EHS has a Lab Coat Selection Guide Matrix that outlines the different types of lab coats available.
How to select the appropriate lab coat?
EHS has a Lab Coat Selection Assessment Tool that walks you through the decisions needed to select the right lab coat based on the anticipated hazards of your work. There is also a frequently asked questions page in Pub 3000 (Lab Coat Selection FAQs) to explain the terms used in the Assessment Tool and to provide additional information on lab coat selection and use.
Once the appropriate lab coats have been identified, they can be purchased through eBuy
What other types of protective clothing may be needed?
For additional protection from splash, you may need to use a chemical-resistant apron or a coat apron, which also protects the arms. These aprons are often made of vinyl or other type of materials that are not flame resistant. Note that if are wearing an FR lab coat, then you need to ensure that your apron is also flame-resistant.
You can also contact your EHS Division Liaison or Health and Safety Rep for assistance in choosing suitable protective clothing your work.
