- What is the Lab’s Safety Shoe Program?
- Employees may be required to wear safety shoes to protect from potential hazards. Employees working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, may be authorized to purchase Safety Shoes. As a minimum, safety shoes must meet the specifications of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F2413.
- Additional safety features may also be necessary and are dependent on the work being performed. More guidance can be found in the LBNL Construction Safety Manual and the LBNL Electrical Safety Manual. Please consult your supervisor for recommendations and authorization to purchase.
- How do I purchase safety shoes?
- A recommended list of safety shoes is available on eBuy. Upon your supervisor’s approval, your department admin can help purchase these on eBuy by selecting S&S Supplies and Solutions from the suppliers tab on the left of your screen. Once you open the S&S Supplies and Solutions catalog by selecting the small green arrow “punchout” icon, “LBNL Boots” will appear on the first page. The safety shoes available through S&S on eBuy all meet the specifications of the ASTM F2413. Most of the available S&S safety shoes also have an electrical hazard rating (EH). If you prefer to try on your shoes before purchase, please see #3 below regarding the boot trailer.
- Alternate option: the employee may purchase approved safety shoes out-of-pocket, then submit a Payment Request through your department admin for reimbursement.
- Safety shoes may not be purchased via ePro requisition or Division PCard. If an ePro requisition was submitted, the procurement specialist assigned to it will redirect you to obtain the shoes through either of the above options.
- What exactly is the Boot Trailer?
- If desired, employees may try on the shoes available through the S&S Supplies website prior to purchasing to find the best fit from the approved selection. A boot trailer with a selection of the available styles and sizes found on the website is normally scheduled to be on site at the lab for one day on a quarterly basis, in the Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. The boot trailer location is currently scheduled for the parking lot near building 27. Please check the Lab-wide event calendar for confirmation on dates and location, which could be subject to change.
- Do I get my boots right away from the truck?
- No, the boot fit truck allows the opportunity to try on different pairs to determine the desired brand and size. You will place your order on eBuy through your department admin.
- Do I need to take payment information to the truck?
- No, the boot fit truck is solely to try on different pairs to determine the desired brand and size. You will place your order on eBuy through your department admin.
- When providing Project ID, what Project ID should I use? What is the limit?
- Please confirm the PID-AID with your supervisor; safety shoe purchases come from division funds.
- Some divisions have instituted their own threshold; please consult your supervisor for recommendations and authorization to purchase.
- What is the reimbursement quota, i.e., how often can I get new safety shoes?
- It is anticipated that safety shoes should last at least a year of wear, depending on whether they are worn day-to-day or less frequently. Generally, LBNL employees who chose to purchase shoes outside of the S&S eBuy selections, may purchase their own safety shoes for up to $225 annual reimbursement or $300 biennial reimbursement or equal to the provision in the current union labor contracts.
- Please consult your supervisor for recommendations, the authorization to purchase, and the reimbursable limit for your Division of Operation prior to purchase. Reimbursable limits and purchasing practices may vary depending on your role and Division of Operation at the lab, since safety shoe costs are incurred by Division funds.
- The eBuy catalog doesn’t have a place to specify a mail stop for delivery. Will shipping and receiving still deliver the shoes to my mail stop?
- Shoes will be delivered to the employee’s mail stop as shown in the Berkeley Lab Phonebook. Requesters should check their directory listing to ensure there is a mailstop listed for them.
- How long does it typically take to receive my shoes though the eBuy process?
- It typically takes 7-10 calendar days to receive the shoes. If you do not receive the shoe within that time frame, the shoes may be on backorder and you may reach out to S&S Supplies for a status update.
- The Lab’s S&S Supplies and Solutions Inside Sales Representative is Kaylyn Kraus and she can be reached at 707.419.6515 or kaylyn.kraus@totalsafety.com (the Laboratoratories customer number is 5587).
- What if the shoes I receive are not what I ordered, or I changed my mind after placing my order?
- Returns are processed as listed on the Procurement eBuy Returns Center page here.
- What if I want a better, more comfortable shoe insert?
- “Over the counter” gel/foam style inserts for comfort would be considered a personal expense.
- Who do I contact with additional questions?
- Please contact the PPE Subject Matter Expert for safety questions, ProcurementHelp@lbl.gov (Procurement) for purchasing questions or Health Services for medical-related custom PPE questions (e.g. orthotics)
