The Elevated Work program applies to work on any elevated work platform used to raise or lower workers to perform tasks at elevated heights, as well as work requiring the use of ladders and rolling scaffolds.
Scaffold Safety Resources
Scaffold Erectors
- LBNL employees must complete EHS0299: Scaffold Competent Person Training. Contractors must be deemed “scaffold competent” per their employer with submitted training records.
Scaffold Users
- Lab-employed unescorted scaffold users must complete EHS0279: Scaffold User Awareness (or have completed EHS0299). Contractors must ensure their employees have adequate training.
Scaffold Inspectors
- Scaffolds must be and affixed with a green, yellow, or red tag. These tags must be signed daily and re-signed after any modifications. Lab employees who wish to sign scaffold tags must have completed either EHS0299: Scaffold Competent Person Training or EHS 0307 Competent Person Scaffold Inspector. Contractors must be designated “Scaffold Competent” by their employer with submitted training records.

SSSP/sJHA Requirements
- SSSP: Submit Scaffold Erector/User JHA. If scaffold will exceed 6 feet in height, please also attach Site-Specific Scaffold Plan and a Site-Specific Fall Protection Plan if using Fall Protection equipment.
- sJHA: Indicate scaffold use on sJHA questionnaire. If scaffold will exceed 6 feet in height, also submit Site-Specific Scaffold Plan to Scaffold SME and Site-Specific Fall Protection Plan if using Fall Protection equipment.
Aerial Lift Safety Resources
Aerial Lift Operators
- LBNL Employees must complete EHS 022: Aerial Work Platform Practical & EHS 023: Aerial Work Platform Training. Contractors must be trained by their employers and submit training records.
Aerial Lift Inspectors
- MEWP inspectors have the same requirements as MEWP operators. Aerial lift operators are required to perform a documented pre-use inspection of the equipment as well as an inspection of the work area where they will be operating the aerial lift. Inspections must include recommended items in the manufacturer’s manual. LBNL employee inspections must be documented on the daily inspection checklists – see Daily MEWP Inspection Checklist: One-man Scissor Lifts – Type 1 and Type 3, Group A or Daily MEWP Inspection Checklist: Boom Lifts – Type 3, Group B. The checklists must be kept with other project safety documentation.
SSSP/sJHA Requirements
- SSSP: Submit Aerial Lift JHA and Site Specific Fall Protection Plan
- sJHA: Indicate MEWP use on sJHA questionnaire and submit Site-Specific Fall Protection Plan
Ladder Safety Resources
Ladder Users
- LBNL employees and guests must complete EHS 0278: Ladder Safety to utilize ladders at the lab.
SSSP/sJHA Requirements

- sJHA: Identify use on questionnaire.
