What types of eye and face protection are available?
Safety Glasses protect the eyes there is risk of flying particles and may provide limited protection when handling small quantities of chemicals. Safety glasses must always have side shields.
Goggles provide additional protection when there is risk of a splash to the eyes.
Face shields provide protection to the face when there is significant risk of splash or flying particles. When using a face shield, it is important to also wear some form of eye protection (e.g., safety glasses or goggles). Regular eye glasses are not sufficient.
What about prescription eyewear?
Safety glasses are available that are designed to comfortably fit over your regular prescription eyewear. These safety glasses have side shields built in. Most goggles will fit over your regular eyewear. If you need prescription safety glasses, please click HERE for more information.
How to select eye or face protection?
Appropriate eye or face protection is usually determined through the Work Planning and Control (insert link to WPC page) process when developing a Work Activity. Eye protection requirements are posted at the entrances to laboratories and other technical areas.
You can also contact your EHS Division Liaison or Health and Safety Rep for assistance in selecting eye or face protection. Once the appropriate eye or face protection has been identified, it can be purchased through eBuy.
Remember that eye and face protection should be comfortable to wear – the best eye protection in the world won’t help you if it isn’t being worn!
