The Lab’s main hill site is nestled in 200 acres of grasses and trees. Each year, Berkeley Lab brings about 300 goats to the main hill site to eat the grasses as an environmentally friendly way to reduce fire risk. But the goats can’t reduce the fire danger alone. They need human assistance.
One of the main fire dangers comes from the improper disposal of smoking materials. The Lab has 20 designated smoking sites on the hill site that are paved, and each site has containers for the disposal of smoking materials.
Disposing of cigarette butts in wooden posts, vegetation, and trees is not smart. A wildland fire on Lab property can move quickly, destroying the beauty of the Lab and spreading to our neighbors.
The goats cannot protect the Lab property on their own. Please do your part and smoke only in designated smoking areas, extinguish smoking material, and then properly dispose of it.

- These areas are provided with ashcans to deposit smoking material.
- Extinguish smoking material before depositing it into the can.
- Do not put trash in the can; this can cause a fire.
