The DOE Site Office and LBNL are partnering to assess integrated safety management (ISM) August 4th-7th. Assessors will ask questions about how staff plan their work, how they identify hazards and what they do to stay safe. The assessment will focus on staff working in our research labs – both lab workers and their activity leads will be questioned on the following topics:
- Work preparation (such as what goes into planning a typical day’s work and what helped prepare you for your work)
- Changing conditions (such as if something isn’t working right and you need to try a different approach, what do you do)
- Hazards and controls (such as what are the greatest hazards associated with your work and what safety controls do you use to keep yourself safe)
- Feedback mechanisms (such as when is safety typically discussed and what type of issues are discussed)
The questions for activity leads are a bit different, focusing more on issues like worker authorization and overseeing work.
If you are approached by one of the DOE/LBNL teams during the assessment, please be open and candid in sharing your thoughts and opinions with them. The goals of the assessment are to learn and improve, which are key parts of ISM. Additional information can be found on the website ism.lbl.gov.
