With the coming holidays and decorations that come with them, it’s important to remember our basic electrical safety training (EHS0260) to prevent shocks, fire and to be energy conscious.
Here are a few keys for home safety and when decorating for the holidays:
- Never leave candles or fireplaces unattended
- Only use NRTL approved electrical devices (UL / ETL / CSA listed)
- Check cords (including extension cords) for cracking, fraying or other damage to the exterior shielding – take out of service if damaged
- Do not overload an extension cord or outlet with too many electrical devices – check manufacturer recommendations for max string lights connected to each other
- Plugin items fully so there are no exposed electrified prongs
- Ensure items placed outside are rated for outdoor use
- Use a timer so lights aren’t accidentally left on (also reduces energy use!) and always turn them off when not at home
- Make sure your outdoor lights are plugged into GFCI outlets (portable ones can be purchased)
- When storing cords and lights, make sure they are clean and dry and be careful not to coil them too tightly
