Dr. Joe Toscano, the Lab’s Medical Director, discusses the importance of vaccinations in the video below:
Information on vaccination recommendations for Winter/Spring 2026-2027.
The FDA approved the 2026-27 version of the COVID vaccine similar to last year. This approval includes those 65 years old and older, and those under age 65 with at least one health condition putting them at risk for a worse outcome if they were to become infected with COVID. Standards of care in medical practice do permit licensed healthcare professionals to use medications beyond FDA-approval when the balance of benefit and risk is felt to be acceptable by experts. Along these lines, last year and this, authoritative medical bodies have issued statements to this effect, recommending COVID vaccine be available to all patients 6 months of age and older, as in the past. Similar guidance was issued by UC Health and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
Recommendations and FDA approval for influenza vaccination continue unchanged from the past: with few exceptions (e.g., prior severe adverse reaction or known allergy to a component of the vaccine), vaccination is recommended annually for everyone 6 months of age and older.
Though health insurers may base their payment for vaccination on FDA-approval, all vaccinations given at LBL are free of charge.
Respiratory virus season continues into the spring of 2027. For more information about how to protect yourselves, your families and your coworkers, visit the Health Services webpage on the subject.
