After a pilot program at JBEI and ABPDU, LBNL’s Waste Management Group is launching the new Waste Management System (WMS) site-wide on 9/8. WMS training sessions will be offered via Zoom on 9/4, 9/10, and 9/18 – click here to sign up. An overview of the new features of WMS, helpful tips for users, and feedback from the pilot follows below.
New System, New Features
LBNL’s Waste Management Group (WMG) has worked with software vendors to develop the new web-based system. WMS has several new helpful features:
- New webform-based data entry: WMS offers a more efficient way to enter waste information – the new webform has new fields that make it easier to submit waste requests
- Printable waste requisition labels. WMS gives users the option of printing labels (although handwritten labels may still be used, printed labels are required for waste pickup)
- New waste tracking feature: WMS increases the ability of users and WMG to track waste containers
WMS login, new training resources, and FAQs will be available here starting on 9/8.
EmeryStation East Pilot – Feedback and Tips for Users
EmeryStation East (ESE) piloted WMS for several months. Rosanne Boudreau, DSC for JBEI and ABPDU, shared her Divisions’ feedback and tips for new users of WMS.
According to Rosanne, the new webform was “a big hit” with early adopters, and it was reportedly “very user friendly.” The new printable labels were also well received, especially by researchers who routinely generate waste with numerous components. Rosanne appreciated no longer having to “decipher handwriting” on the new, printed waste labels. The new training resources developed for the system were also rated highly by JBEI and ABPDU users.
Rosanne also gave the following advice to new users of WMS:
- When looking for chemicals in the system, use a CAS search. If you can’t find the chemical you’re looking for, make sure to click on the “i” button – that will tell you what you need to do to get the chemical entered into the system
- Use the packing slips provided by EHS to affix print-outs to waste containers
- To start a new container, create a draft requisition, print out the label, and don’t submit yet
