PPE should be selected based on the specific printing method and material. For more PPE guidance reach out to the PPE SME and refer to the PPE policy.
Eye and Face Protection
- General Eye Safety: Wear safety glasses or goggles during loading/unloading, post-processing, and cleaning.
- Laser Safety: Consult Berkeley Lab’s Laser Safety Officer (LSO) and manufacturer guidance for laser safety eyewear if lasers are unguarded.
Hand Protection
- Cut-Resistant Gloves: Required when using tools or razors to remove supports or objects from the build plate.
- Chemical Resistant Gloves: Consult the SDS for specific glove requirements if handling hazardous chemicals
Body Protection
- Lab Apparel: Wear lab coats when handling any chemicals including wash solutions and powders.
- General Clothing: Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes at all times when handling chemicals.
Respiratory Protection
- Standard Use: Generally not required for standard use. Consult with the Respiratory Protection SME or your Division Safety Coordinator if there are any concerns (Whom To Call – EHS).
- Voluntary Use: N95 respirators may be used for comfort against particulates (including UFPs), but they do not reduce exposure to VOCs. Users must complete an acknowledgement and one-time training (EHS0311: Respirator Awareness Training) before they are allowed to use N95s on a voluntary basis. Consult with the Respiratory Protection SME (Whom To Call – EHS).
- Metal Printing: While stainless steel printing may not require respirators, the use of other metal powders or sieving processes requires an EHS Respirator Hazard Evaluation. Consult with the Respiratory Protection SME (Whom To Call – EHS).
