Following these steps protects our workforce, the public, and the environment from hazards related to equipment operation, printing materials, emissions, and byproducts.
What is 3D Printing Technology?
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a highly versatile form of additive manufacturing. The process involves:
- Digital Modeling: Creating or replicating an object using 3D modeling software or a 3D scanner.
- Layered Slicing: Specialized software slices the digital file into precise horizontal layers.
- Material Assembly: The printer uses localized heating to assemble these layers sequentially, forming a physical 3D object tailored for scientific research.
Who Must Follow This Guidance?
This safety guidance is applicable to all Berkeley Lab personnel who engage in the operation of 3D printing equipment, including:
- Employees
- Participating Guests
- Affiliates
Note: This policy applies to equipment actively utilized for 3D printing. Customized apparatuses that no longer retain functional printing capabilities are excluded from this specific scope.
Core Compliance Rules
To maintain a safe work environment, all design and fabrication activities must strictly adhere to the following institutional mandates:
- Policy Alignment: All related hazards must be rigorously controlled in a manner consistent with LBNL policies.
- Prohibited Items: No unauthorized or prohibited items may be produced on-site using the 3D printer.
- Gas Safety Integration: If your specific 3D printing process utilizes gases, you must strictly follow the official Gas Safety Policy.
- Personal Equipment: Bringing personal 3D printers on-site for LBNL work is prohibited.
- Mandatory Procurement: All 3D printing hardware and material must be officially acquired through the standard LBNL procurement process.
