3D printing operations typically utilize combustible powders or metals, an inert gas supply, or a combustible dust collection system. These systems create a hazardous (classified) location area or zone outside the equipment.

- Size & Output: Large format or high-throughput systems.
- Temperature: High-temperature processes depending on the application.
- Enclosure: A fully enclosed system with a dedicated exhaust may be required.
- Classification: Considered a manufacturing process under OSHA guidance.

Safety, Controls, and Compliance
- Monitoring: Established based on the Hazard Assessment results.

Mandatory Permitting
An operational permit that assesses fire risk and Fire Code regulations will be issued by the Berkeley Lab Fire Marshal’s Office. This permit is required for the use of any Industrial 3D printer.
