These 3D printing systems are designed for non-industrial, occupied indoor environments. They are used where personnel or the public are present for prolonged durations without requiring dedicated industrial ventilation. Typical settings at LBNL include:
- Offices
- Libraries
- R&D laboratories
- Maker spaces
- Wet labs
- Machine shops
Defining Characteristics
- Size: Desktop or benchtop size.
- Throughput: Possess limited throughput.
- Materials: Utilize common thermoplastics (PLA, ABS, PETG, ASA, Nylon) and other materials may be used as well.
- Operation: Frequently operated in close proximity to personnel.
Special Exceptions
Certain benchtop Vat Polymerization systems (SLA/DLP) used for research or recreation may not require industrial classification. However, they mandate specific engineering controls, such as dedicated placement in laboratory environments instead of conventional office spaces. This will be determined by the Hazard Assessment
Possible Hazards and Ventilation
- Air Quality: The principal hazard is the generation of air contaminants adversely affecting indoor air quality.
- Monitoring: Quantitative exposure monitoring is generally not required if emissions are expected to be low and ventilation is adequate.
- Verification: Ventilation adequacy and the need for quantitative exposure monitoring will be verified through the Hazard Assessment.
