LBNL’s Ergonomics Program is committed to fostering a safe and comfortable workspace for everyone – whether that workspace is at the Lab or at home. While Berkeley Lab has embraced telework as an effective work mode over the past few years, the Lab has seen a recent increase in ergonomic injuries among teleworkers. In the first 2 quarters of FY24 the Lab had 8 computer ergonomics injuries. Unfortunately, 6 (75%) of these injuries were so severe that the affected employees required medical treatment or work accommodations, or could not work at all (referred to as “OSHA Recordable”). All 6 of these severe injuries occurred while employees were teleworking.
Ergonomic telework injuries have been on the rise at LBNL over the first two quarters of FY24.
This guide provides valuable information and resources for both supervisors and employees to work together to create a healthy telework culture.
Supervisors: Champions of Ergonomic Wellbeing
- Open Communication is Key: Encourage your team members to openly discuss any discomfort they experience or ask questions about their home office setup.
- Be an Ergonomics Resource: Share information about the Ergonomics Program’s resources, including our website with setup guides, ergonomic evaluations, and contact details for Ergo Advocates (https://ergo.lbl.gov/ and https://telework.lbl.gov/).
- Schedule Ergonomic Check-Ins: Inquire about your employees comfort and safety during individual check-ins – inquire about their workspace setup, workload, and remind them to take breaks and stretch throughout the day.
- Lead by Example: Demonstrate good ergonomic practices during video calls by maintaining proper posture and using a headset if necessary.
- Plan Ahead: Anticipate and plan for changes that could lead to increased workload and increased ergonomic risks.
- Encourage Early Reporting: You can promote a culture of safety that encourages early reporting of discomfort or any safety-related concerns by having regular discussions with your staff.
Employees: Take Charge of Your Home Workspace
- Ergonomic Essentials: Visit our website (https://ergo.lbl.gov/i-am-a-teleworker-or-remote-worker) for a comprehensive guide to setting up a telework workstation. Learn about specific telework resources including access to telework equipment and accessories, discover techniques to prevent discomfort, and get tips for a pain-free workday.
- Request an Ergonomic Evaluation: Concerned about your home office setup? Request an ergonomic evaluation with an Ergo Advocate! These evaluations can be conducted virtually via Zoom.
- Ergonomic Advocates by Your Side: Each division has a designated Ergo Advocate, your personal ergonomics support! Reach out to them with any questions or for guidance on creating the perfect ergonomic setup.
Simple Tips for Big Results (For Everyone!)
- Move It or Lose It: Don’t get glued to your chair! Get up and move around every 30 minutes to an hour. Stretch, walk around, or do some light exercises to keep your blood flowing. Need help to move? Try RSIGuard, a free downloadable break software provided by Berkeley Lab.
- Posture Power: Good posture is key! Be mindful of your posture. Keep your back and feet comfortable and supported. Neck and shoulders relaxed with your arms and hands close to your body.
- Listen to Your Body: Your body is a wise friend – pay attention to it! If you start to experience any discomfort, take a break and adjust your posture or workstation setup.
